Tasting notes
Helen Keplinger's 2012 Basilisk, 100% Grenache from a site on the Russian River Valley, bursts from the glass with exotic red fruit, pomegranate, orange peel, spices and licorice. Racy and voluptuous in the glass, the 2012 is all about texture. Varietal notes are a bit buried by the pure intensity of the fruit, but there is nevertheless plenty to like, starting with the wine's boisterous personality.

Bright medium ruby. Reticent but pure aromas of black cherry, minerals and licorice. Very ripe and broad but youthfully tight, showing a medicinal reserve to its dark fruit and rocky flavors. Not at all a sweet style of grenache and quite tannic on the aftertaste. This will need a couple years in the cellar.
