Tasting notes
The 2021 Pinot Noir Bodega Thieriot is a new wine in this range made from a young, recently planted vineyard in just its second year of production. The aromatics alone are beguiling, but the wine remains a bit compact in feel. I suspect much of that has to do with vine age. Bright red-toned fruit, lavender, sage, blood orange and spice lend exotic beauty throughout.

A semi-opaque red, the 2021 Pinot Noir Bodega Thieriot Vineyard is potent and layered with notes of incense, blackberry, and sage. Full-bodied, with fantastic balance, fine tannins, and a note of black tea, it’s ripe without weight. Drink 2024-2040. Owned by Thomas Rivers Brown and Genevieve Marie Welsh and based in Calistoga, Rivers Marie specializes in single varietal, single vineyard expressions of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon. One of Sonoma's most prolific winemakers and consultants, Thomas Rivers Brown grew up in South Carolina and later went on to work at Turley before carving his own path forward. I met with Thomas and Will Segui, the assistant winemaker, at the Calistoga winery this May to taste the wines for this report. Having been hit incredibly hard in 2020, their 2021s are showing even better than I could have anticipated from last year’s barrel samples. These are some of the best wines I have ever tasted from Rivers Marie, with exceptional balance and finesse.
The nose of the 2021 Bodega Thieriot is noted by white pepper and black raspberry. The palate is tension-driven, with cherry pit, raspberry seed, and rosehip. Drink 2025-2035.
