Compared to the 2003, the 2004 Les Cailloux Châteauneuf-du-Pape sports a bright, pretty and nuanced bouquet of black cherries, earth, stems, herbs and spice aromas and it has beautiful purity and lift. The palate is medium to full bodied with nice acidity, beautiful balance, a silky, streamlined texture and a long finish. 91

The 2004 Chateauneuf du Pape is elegant, with notes of sweet strawberries and cherries, Provencal herbs, and a hint of nori (the sushi seafood wrapper) along with some plum and fig. This is a fruity, rich, medium to full-bodied, soft and velvety 2004 to drink over the next 7-8 years. Andre Brunel has always been one of the most progressive and brilliant proprietors of Chateauneuf du Pape and the good news is that he has purchased 40 hectares (that’s over 100 acres) of high-class Cotes du Rhone vineyards near Chateauneuf du Pape, so we can expect to see larger quantities of serious wines emerge. Deep red. Powerful aromas of cherry, raspberry preserves and candied licorice are complicated by garrigue and dark chocolate. Lush, creamy and suave, with fresh red and dark fruit flavors, gentle tannins and a long, spicy finish. This has put on weight since I tasted it a year ago and is showing very well right now.

Roussanne: Grenache Blanc: Clairette at 70: 15: 15 Rich and winning. Very sweet and modern but fresh and interesting too. Just perhaps very very slightly watery on the finish but very well made. Some structure. (JR)
