Score 90/100 · Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, May 2014

(a blend of 36% merlot, 34% cabernet franc, 27% cabernet sauvignon and 3% petit verdot; from a northwest-facing vineyard at the foot of Howell Mountain): Dark red. Plum, raspberry, smoke, milk chocolate, licorice and tobacco on the nose and palate. A moderately intense midweight with an impression of medicinal reserve; could use a bit more stuffing to support its dusty tannins. Less refined than the 2012 version.

(just an estimated 325 cases to be produced; a blend of 39% cabernet franc, 34% merlot and 27% cabernet sauvignon): Good deep ruby-red. Medicinal cherry, mocha and chicory on the nose. Then dense but nicely delineated, with excellent acidity and a floral element (from the high cabernet franc content?) providing lift to the middle palate. Not hugely deep or sweet but offers captivating perfume. This warm spot has benefited from the cooler vintage.
