More expensive (it might be the most expensive Pinot Noir in this report), the 2017 Pinot Noir Observation Series Mt. Carmel reveals a deep ruby/plum color to go with a more exotic nose of mulberries, sweet spice, exotic flowers, and incense. Rich, medium to full-bodied, concentrated, and textured, it's certainly a deeper, richer wine than the classic Sta. Rita release yet still has beautiful balance and length. While I review Kosta Bowne in the Sonoma report, I was able to taste a handful of wines from both Santa Barbara County and the Santa Lucia Highlands for this report.

The winery's Observations series focuses on unique blocks, and the history and setting of Mt. Carmel, planted by renegade nuns atop the Sta. Rita Hills, makes for a compelling showcase. This bottling starts with aromas of cranberry, pomegranate paste and sandalwood, leading into an earthy palate that's dense with black raspberry and carnation. The fine-tuned structure is most promising.

Aged 22 months in 54% new French and Austrian oak, the medium ruby colored 2017 Pinot Noir Mt. Carmel Observations Series offers aromas of saline, nori, crushed stone, Bing cherries and fresh cranberries with notes of dried bark, pepper, earth and citrus peel. The palate is medium-bodied with an extraordinarily silky texture and explosive ripe fruits layered with herbs and perfume. It has a firm, ripe frame and addicting freshness, finishing very long and layered. This is fantastic! 185 cases produced.
