The 2009 Volnay 1er Cru Santenots has a sensual, pure bouquet of dark cherries, strawberry and sous-bois scents that are very well-defined and unfurl nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a saline note on the entry. There is a gentle but insistent grip in the mouth with just a touch of spice at the tip of the tongue on the finish. Very fine. Drink now-2022. Nicolas Rossignol is producing a clutch of outstanding wines from his winery on the Beaune periphique (see my review of his 2012s). Here are two or three older vintages. Importer: Becky Wasserman Selection (Le Serbet) and through various US importers (see www.leserbet.com for full list) and Lea & Sandeman (UK)

The 2009 Volnay Santenots is rich, textured and expansive. It possesses notable energy and intensity in its dark red fruit. Today the Santenots is quite beautiful but also inward. It needs at least a handful of years in bottle. This is one of the richer wines in the lineup.

It needs at least a handful of years in bottle. This is one of the richer wines in the lineup. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2029. Nicolas Rossignol began picking on September 10th and brought in very ripe fruit, with natural alcohols in the 13.5% range. Rossignol used a higher percentage of stems than normal to give the wines a measure of freshness. The wines saw 20-24 days of cuvaison (with no cold soak) with one punchdown per day. New oak ranged from 15% for the villages to 33-50% for the 1ers. The wines were not racked during their time in barrel. Rossignol has an energy and passion that will take him far. His 2009s are a bit all over the place stylistically, though, and it appears that a distinct house style has yet to emerge. Quite dark crimson. Lots of sweetness but not that much flavour. Easy flattering fruity stuff and then a little chewy. One of Nicolas Rossignol’s better wines but probably not one of the best Santenots. (JR)
