Score 94/100 · Drink 2026-2036, Jeb Dunnuck, Dec 2025

The first year in some time where this cuvée has not seen some American oak in the élevage, and also the first time in a while that it's made from 100% estate fruit, the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is one of the finest examples of this cuvée I can remember. Based on 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, with smaller amounts of Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc, aged 16 months in 55% new French oak, it offers crème de cassis, graphite, classy oak, and even a kiss of chalky minerality. It's medium to full-bodied, with a pure, layered mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. This will compete with wines two to three times its price and should be snatched up by savvy readers. There are roughly 19,800 cases produced. Drink 2026-2036.

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) is bright, punchy and full of character. Brisk acids and lifted floral notes make a strong first impression. Cool blue-toned fruit, lavender, spice, menthol and dried herbs race out of the glass. This is another gorgeous wine from Phelps.

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) represents a pretty significant departure for Phelps. The Cabernet percentage (98%) is especially high, while American oak has been replaced with French oak barrels. Vibrant and driving in feel, the 2023 possesses notable energy from start to finish. Cool blue-toned fruits, sage, mint, licorice and lavender are some of the notes that slowly open in the glass. Bright acids extend the finish. What a pretty wine this is.
