Paler, green-tinged yellow. An initial touch of reduction blew off to reveal aromas of lemon drop, peach and minerals. A bit less harmonious in the early going than the Garenne, still with a faint citric edge. Less peachy, sweet and pliant; a bit youthfully disjointed but not quite tart. Finishes with a note of sour lemon. This wine is not yet offering the personality of the Garenne but give it a year or two. Incidentally, both of these wines featured close-to-normal yields in 2016.

The 2016 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru les Chalumeaux, matured in just under 15% new oak, has a fine, quite minerally bouquet with touches of limestone and granite. This is nicely detailed. The palate is well defined with a fine bead of acidity, fresh citric fruit with good depth and a brisk saline finish that will keep you coming back for more.
(20% new oak; 12.8% alcohol after light chaptalization): Bright medium yellow. Very ripe aromas of peach and ginger. Plump, dry and spicy, with its orange and peach flavors complicated by a salty quality and framed by a note of sour lemon candy. A bit herbal and edgy on the end. Distinctly lemony wine with good density, moderate ripeness and very good length.
About the producer
Volnay’s Domaine de Montille is one of the most historic in the Côte d’Or. Founded in 1730, the property remains family-owned and run, with Etienne de Montille – the ninth generation – at the helm today.
