Score 89/100 · Drink 2019-2024, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Mar 2019

The 2007 Boca is closed and is having difficultly expressing itself. If you dig deep, the quality of aromas is there, but this wine falls short of the extreme focus and clarity that you get in 2008 or many of the previous vintages tasted during this historic retrospective. The hot growing season meant that harvest came a full month early, on September 20th. The fruit was healthy and plentiful, but Nebbiolo (which makes up the majority of the blend with a smaller part Vespolina) shows its best results in slow-maturing vintages. Christoph Künzli says this vintage provided many "teachable moments." For example, he regrets putting the wine through three years of aging in oak botte, because he believes four years would have made for better and more stable results. This vintage has declined since I last tasted it, and I am shortening its previously recommended drinking window as a result.

Early harvest. Not a warm year here overall but warm April, hence advance on the harvest. More open and expressive than the 2008. Cedary, herbal fragrance. A little bit bloody, then red fruits as it opens up. Deeper and more powerful too. A firm grip but less elegant than the 2008. Much the gentlest of the vintages tasted. 6.5 g/l. (JH)

The 2007 Boca is once again terrific. This dazzling red literally explodes from the glass. Sweet red berries, rose petals, mint and mountain herbs are just some of the nuances that take shape in the glass. The warm vintage has given the wine a little more body than normal without overpowering the weightless, elegant style readers who know these wines are familiar with. This shows crystalline purity and fabulous balance from start to finish. It is a superb showing from proprietor Christophe Kunzli.
