A rock-solid 2017, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Laurel Glen Vineyard has a deep ruby hue to go with Bordeaux-like aromas and flavors of blackcurrants, lead pencil, loamy soil, and tobacco. Playing in the medium-bodied end of the spectrum, it has a fresh, focused texture, plenty of building tannins, good overall balance, and a great finish. There's a chewier edge to the tannins, but I like the overall balance, and it should benefit from a year or two of bottle age and have 15+ of overall longevity.

A barrel sample to be bottled in July. Winemaker notes: Primarily from Block 4, planted by Patrick Campbell in 1978, part of which burned in the fires. Opaque, black core with ruby edges. Star bright. Aromatic notes are spiced, woody (as in forest woods not oak) with resinous herbs. Juicy black fruits begin to appear with air. The palate is full of juicy, mouth-watering black fruits, resinous herbs and ferric elements. There are impressively fine-grained tannins here with a good balance of mouth-watering acidity. The vintage shows lovely finesse and fine-boned flavour as well. This is a lovely vintage with intriguing subtlety and an ultra-long finish. There is good respect for the vintage here as well – 2017 has the ability to deliver quite fine-grained nuance from the producers that respected the year’s lighter character. This barrel sample is a good example of that respectful execution. Nicely done. (ECB)
