Score 97/100 · Drink 2013-2018, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate, Mar 2013

Deep garnet-black in color, the 1999 Descendent shows intensely earthy and meaty aromas accented by notes of charcoal, smoked meat, dark cherry compote, some menthol and anise. Full-bodied and rich, more so in the mouth than on the nose, it is structured by firm, grainy tannins and crisp acid. The finish gives long, layered and concentrated savory notes with hints of licorice and fennel seed. Drink it now to 2018+. Importer: Wine Creek Cellars, Sonoma, CA.

Bright deep ruby to the rim. Knockout nose combines blackberry, violet, bitter chocolate, orange peel, leather, graphite and exotic spices, plus light vegetal and animal nuances. A wine of great thrust and flavor intensity; black fruit, bitter chocolate and spice flavors dance on the palate. Finishes with terrific grip and persistence, and a late hint of dried herbs. A bit cooler than the '98, and better for it.
