Tasting notes
Another potential 50-year wine is the 2013 Petite Sirah The Other. It’s 100% Petite Sirah aged 18 months in all French oak of which 50% was new. They don’t make much of it, but it’s opaque, nearly black/blue in color, has off-the-charts richness, and for those in the advanced tasting program of Ridge years and years ago, this Petite Sirah comes from the old Park-Muscatine Vineyard. This has super blueberry and blackberry fruit with charcoal, incense and violets. It is a killer effort that should be showing more nuances in about a decade and last 40-50 years.

The 2013 Petite Sirah The Other is fabulous. Intensely aromatic and powerful in the glass, the 2013 shows just how compelling Petite can be on Howell Mountain. Blackberry jam, crème de cassis, lavender, blood orange and inky fruit are some of the signatures. This explosive, voluptuous Petite should drink well for many years, although it needs time in bottle to settle down. The Petite remains the hidden jewel in the Outpost lineup. The 2013 is superb.
Inky, sweet and dense, the 2013 Petite Sirah The Other boasts tons of mid-palate richness and depth. The 2013 is a bit sweeter and less tannic than I would have expected. Overall, this is a nicely layered, polished Petite with lovely overall balance and a tamed personality that covers some of the wilder, gamier hues of Petite.
