Tasting notes
A terrific effort in a difficult year, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Chante le Merle Vieilles Vignes continues to drink superbly. There's just a hint of brick to this wine, which is slow to open on the nose, eventually delivering some sweet, plummy fruit. Full-bodied, rich and velvety, this comes across as still reasonably young, with up to a decade more of potential longevity.

Brilliant ruby-red. Fresh redcurrant and cherry-cola on the highly perfumed, floral nose. Broad and deep but lively on the palate, offering intense red fruit preserve, lavender pastille and anise flavors lifted by peppery spices. Tightly focused on the youthfully tannic, persistent finish, which smoothly plays richness off vivacity. There's 16.5% alcohol here, in case you're driving.
Vivid ruby. Vibrant aromas of redcurrant and cherry are lifted by floral and Asian spice topnotes. Juicy and penetrating, with flavors of ripe red fruits and candied flowers. Spicy, focused and appealingly sweet, picking up zesty minerality with air and finishing with harmonious tannins and very good length.
