Score 90/100 · Drink 2018-2033, Jeb Dunnuck, Dec 2018

The 1999 Volnay Clos des Chênes is an outstanding Volnay that’s drinking nicely today. It offers a relatively tight, earthy style in its dark fruits, forest floor, earth, and baking spice-driven aromas and flavors, and this style carries over to the palate where it has good density, a more backward, reserved style, but good length and balance. The tannins might outlive the fruit when all is said and done, but there’s no denying the character and class here. It has another 10-15 years of life ahead of it.

Bright red-ruby color. Cool aromas of kirsch, licorice, mint, dark chocolate and spices. Bright and nicely intense; less expansive than the Caillerets but showing more clarity today. Notes of mint and lead pencil, plus some faintly medicinal bitter cherry on the back end. The tannins coat the front teeth.
