Score 94/100 · James Suckling, Mar 2025

A cabernet sauvignon–based blend with some merlot and just a dash of tempranillo, this offers an attractive dark-fruited nose with hints of crushed walnuts, bay leaves, blackcurrant bush and wet stones. The palate is framed and tight yet finely textured, showing a juicy flow of fruit underneath a firm and chewy tannin structure. Long and tightly wound. From biodynamically grown grapes.

The 2021 Camaspelo opens with a mentholated freshness, blending blackcurrants with dried herbs, tobacco and split pine. It washes across the palate with velvety textures offset by a core of tart red and black fruits as rosy inner florals and fine tannins mingle toward the close. The 2021 finishes structured, long and youthfully dry with hints of cocoa and steely minerals that linger on. More time in the cellar will pay dividends.

Leading off the Bordeaux variety releases, the 2021 Camaspelo is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, and I believe it's raised in larger barrels. It always reminds me of a Margaux with its more spicy, complex, perfumed style, and it has lots of savory red and black fruits as well as notes of dried tobacco, underbrush, chocolate, and lead pencil. Medium to full-bodied, supple, layered, and elegant, it has an already irresistible profile yet should evolve for 15 years or more.

The 2021 Camaspelo displays a rich array of dark red and black fruit tones complemented by earthy notes of scorched violets, hints of baking spices, turned earth and dried herbs. Medium to full-bodied, the palate exhibits freshness, firmness and layering, unveiling flavors of grilled plums and cherries with nuances of bitter dark chocolate and graphite. The mouthfeel remains tight, with a succulent tannic grip, indicating the potential for graceful aging of approximately 15 years. Decanting is recommended. Enjoy with food. This wine spent 18 months aging in 30% new and neutral French oak. Only 4,416 bottles were produced.
