Score 93/100 · Drink 2025-2035, Jeb Dunnuck, May 2025

Jammy black raspberries, violets, mulled cherries, and roasted meats all emerge from the 2022 Saint Joseph Vieilles Vignes. Medium to full-bodied and nicely balanced on the palate, with concentration, ripe, polished tannins, and beautiful length, this smoking good Northern Rhône will drink well over the coming decade. Drink 2025-2035.

The 2022 Saint-Joseph Vieilles Vignes opens with intense graphite, black plum, licorice and a touch of wood smoke. Medium- to full-bodied, round and concentrated, the 2022 packs lively energy on the palate, always staying fresh and focused. This terminates with good length and a splash of vanilla on the savory aftertaste.

85% Marsanne, 15% Roussanne. Vines between 30 and 40 years old. From Le Paradis sur Mauves, La Ribaudy sur Chavanay, Rochecourbe sur St-Pierre de Boeuf. Aged 12 months in new and two-year-old barrels. No fining and very light filtration. Heady and rich, without quite the pace or salinity of the Crozes Blanc 2022. Round and almost soft, though there’s a little chew on the end. (JR)

50% destemmed. 12 months in new and second-use barrels then 8 months in foudre (Tronçais, Allier). Cask sample. Tasted blind. A brooding nose with cedar and spice. A thick, dense core of concentrated fruit with firm sandy tannins, deep and intense with a thick, rich and opulent mouthfeel – fleshy, seductive and ripe. (AC)
