Tasting notes
The Keermont Vineyards 2018 Stellenbosch Keermont Syrah is a medium- to full-bodied wine with ripe aromas of sweet cherry, spice, baked plum and scorched earth. There are hints of raisin and prune, but the wine also shows dried herb. It is predominantly Syrah or, more specifically, 89% Syrah and 11% Mourvèdre. A small portion of whole-bunch fruit is used, and the wine ferments with wild yeasts. It ages in barrel for 22 months and stays in bottle for three years before its commercial release. Production is 13,074 bottles.

The 2018 Syrah spent three to four weeks fermenting and macerating on the skins in small open-top tanks with one or two gentle ‘punch-downs’ performed daily. This wine spent 20 months maturing in seasoned 225L and 500L French oak barrels before being bottled by hand without filtration. It has a slightly "compact" bouquet with bramble red berry fruit, white pepper and subtle bay leaf aromas gently unfolding with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied, with a liberal sprinkling of black pepper on the entry. It’s quite "cool" in style, very harmonious with a finish you could easily mistake for a fine Northern Rhône. Excellent linearity here, superb.
