The 1995 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru is a last-minute addition to an already splendid dinner. It has a magnificent bouquet, very immediate with raspberry and cranberry fruit infused with crushed limestone scents percolating through with time. Wonderful transparency here. The palate is fresh and very sappy, surprisingly linear and strict with coiled-up energy. Reflecting upon this wine as it opens I am drawn to more comparisons to Morey-Saint-Denis than Gevrey-Chambertin with real drive on the finish. Superb. Tasted at Hide in London.

The last time I tasted the 1995 Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru from Roumier was back in 2010. Here, served from a magnum no less, I found that the bouquet remains quite sensual, but perhaps more backward and sultry than expected, possibly because of the larger format it was served from. The palate is medium-bodied, elegant and refined with orange rind and hints of brown sugar interlacing the red berry fruit. Again, like the bottle in 2010, I find this does not quite deliver the persistence you would expect from a wine of this stature, which is why I am parsimonious with my score. Very fine, no doubt, but not reaching for the stars. Tasted November 2016.
About the producer
Based in Chambolle-Musigny, the domaine was established by Georges Roumier in 1924. The domaine started to bottle their own wines in 1945.
