The 2020 Beaune Clos des Marconnets 1er Cru has quite an intense, rich nose, the imprimatur of the early growing season perhaps more evident here compared to Chanson’s other Premier Crus. The palate is ripe and rounded, quite fleshy and missing the tension displayed by the Grèves or Teorons. This is one I would broach earlier than others. Closure: Diam

Chanson’s 4-ha holding of the Les Marconnets vineyard (40%) is designated Clos des Marconnets. Cask sample. Really pretty deep crimson. Firm nose but obviously dominated by very ripe fruit. Pretty tough, dry structure betraying pretty thick-skinned grapes. I wonder whether the fruit is sufficient to stand up to the dry tannins? (JR)

Lovely raspberry fruit and particularly nice depth of flavour, with accents of mineral, spice and smoke. The texture is supple and generous (as one might expect), and the finish lingers pleasantly. Marconnets is the most northerly of Domaine Chanson’s vineyards, at the border with Savigny. They have 3.5ha in three blocks at mid-slope here in an old clos (with some of the walls still intact). The grapes were very ripe (some above 15%) and they were partially destemmed before a careful extraction and ageing in 30% new casks.
