Ettore Germano specializes in Barolo from Serralunga d'Alba. The wine that casts the widest net is the 2021 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba. With 15,000 bottles made, it opens to a dark color, powerful texture and a richness that supports dark fruit, black licorice, toasted aniseed and candied orange. There is a tart note of pomegranate as well. The wine definitely hits higher on the Nebbiolo intensity meter.

The 2021 Barolo Del Comune Di Serralunga D'Alba pours a deep ruby red color and is spicy on the nose, with notes of licorice, black cherries, cracked pepper, and toasted rosemary. It has fantastic and potent energy on the palate, with a saturating feel and medium to full body, filling the palate with ripe tannin, refreshing acidity, and a powerful gravitas of Serralunga character. It’s only going to benefit from another year or so in bottle. Drink 2026-2040.

‘Young vines’ but already between 15 and 20 years old. Bottled in June 2024. Lustrous ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Hints of oak over sweet raspberry fruit and just a touch of gingerbread, presumably from the oak. Needs lots of air to lift the gingerbread note, while becoming increasingly complex and perfumed with hints of mint. Still a little tight and compact on the palate, with a fine balance between succulent acidity and chalky, fine tannins. Has a cool-climate edge to it and shows real lightness of touch. (WS)

The 2021 Barolo is a classy, polished wine with unusually round edges for a young Serralunga Barolo. Sweet red cherry, pipe tobacco, blood orange and spice all take shape in the glass. Soft contours wrap it all up. This stylish, approachable Barolo is all charm.
