Ettore Germano delivers a few very solid and faithful interpretations from Serralunga d'Alba. The 2020 Barolo Cerretta (with 13,000 bottles released) opens to earthy aromas of iris root, dried flower, cassis and dried cherry. The aromas are painted with broad brush strokes, giving the vintage a distinct character and extra intensity. It offers a medium-plus mouthfeel with elegant, powdery tannins.

Serralunga d’Alba. Just mid ruby. Firm nose of crushed stones, so much so I almost wonder if it is a tiny bit reduced, and with subdued cranberry notes and a whisper of oak. Elegant yet still a little subdued on the palate, with slow-to-unfurl red fruit. Fantastic tactile, coating tannins building up on the finish but perfectly integrating with the fruit. I would wait an additional year before opening this. (WS)

The youthful medium red 2020 Barolo 2020 Cerretta is spicy on the nose with pink peppercorn, cranberry cocktail, cedar, and potpourri. Well-structured and energetic, with fresh acidity, fine tannins, and a clean, stony texture, it’s a very attractive Barolo to drink over the next 8-10 years.

The 2020 Barolo Cerretta is another of the more open-knit wines in this range. Dried cherry, scorched earth, tobacco, incense, worn-in leather and dried flowers are all indicative of a Barolo that is best suited to medium-term drinking. Bright acids pull it all together on the close, extending the finish nicely. The 20% stems are not especially notable.
