Tasting notes
The 2019 Barolo Rive Vigna Specola takes a similar ruby color and is aromatic of ripe cherries, sweet tobacco, polished leather, truffle, and tarry earth. Medium-bodied, it stays light on its feet, with a seamless structure, ripe tannins, and an even freshness. It’s a very well-balanced wine that will do well with another couple of years in the cellar. Drink 2026-2040.

The Figli Luigi Oddero 2019 Barolo Specola is not as dried out as the base Barolo, and this wine offers a little more fruit definition with redcurrant, dried flower and a neutral vegetal tone like celery root or leek. The mouthfeel is a bit short, and you do feel the 14.5% alcohol content. It concludes with dry tannins.
La Morra – Rive. Youthful and just mid ruby. Already a little more open on the nose, but not exactly overburdened with fruit, or perhaps it is just closed. Balsamic and minerally notes. Great balance of fresh, savoury cranberry fruit, long, elegant, coating tannins and lots of supple acidity. Really opens up in the glass. (WS)
