Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux tasting. The 2012 Château de Pez has an attractive blackberry and cedar-scented bouquet, the oak nicely integrated here with hints of marmalade and orange peel in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannin, a little forward and "flashy" in style, not complex but with decent depth on the slightly one-dimensional finish. I have a feeling this has more to offer down the line, hence the plus sign against my score. Tasted January 2016.

Tasted blind. Big and bold – quite dramatic. Some rawness but at least there is some fruit too. (JR)

The 2012 de Pez opens with distinctly savory, ferrous notes. Rose petal, scorched earth, cedar and tobacco are all super-expressive in the glass. Firm tannins give the wine much of its energy and overall tension. The tannins are a bit burly and in need of time to settle down. This dark, brooding Saint-Estèphe could turn out to be one of the surprises of the year.
