Cool-toned and aromatic, the 2009 Carmignano Riserva Piaggia is completely unexpected. Its bouquet impresses with a blend of graphite mineral notes, dusty sage, blackcurrants and hints of menthol. Ripe black fruits mingle with juicy acidity and sweet herbs across a stream of silky yet graceful textures. Incredibly fresh throughout, this finishes long and tactile with a black tea-like sensation and a citrus tinge swirling over a bed of sweet tannins. This is a fantastic performance from a vintage that is often overlooked.

The 2009 Carmignano Riserva Piaggia is richer and deeper than the 2008 in its fruit, yet retains the medium-bodied structure that is typical of the vintage. Tobacco, flowers and cherries wrap around the soft, mid-palate and finish. The 2009 is a bit more overt in its fruit than the 2008, which is made in a more perfumed, energetic style. It will be interesting to follow both vintages over the coming years.

Softer, gentler extractions and longer aging in oak are some of the evolutions in the approach at Piaggia over the last few years. I can’t think of too many wines from Carmignano I would rather drink than these fabulous wines from the Vannucci family. Importer: Skurnik Wines, Syosset, NY; tel. (516) 677-9300
