The medium-bodied 2011 Roero Riserva Mompissano is disjointed with hints of oxidation. The bouquet shows aromas of spice, earth and game, with dark fruit, tar and licorice at the back. This Nebbiolo-based wine is aged in Slavonian oak casks for 30 months.

Canale. Just mid ruby with an orange rim. Fruit-cake nose and Amarene cherries. Supple palate with a medium-bodied feel to it and with a big load of stalky tannins. Cherry fruit comes out on the finish. Perhaps this just needs more age? (WS)

Sweet tobacco, crushed leaves, mint, spices and dried red cherries are pushed forward in the 2011 Roero Mompissano, a wine that is everything Roero should be. Silky tannins, expressive aromatics and beautifully layered fruit are the signatures. In 2011, the Mompissano hits all the right notes.
