Tasting notes
The 2003 Le Macchiole (70% Sangiovese, 20% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc) is irresistibly plump and full of flavor, with suggestions of dark fruit, spices and menthol, and a sleek stylish personality. Beautifully proportioned, the Sangiovese seems to give the wine outstanding freshness considering the vintage. Already open and delicious, it should continue to offer enjoyable drinking over the next five to seven years, perhaps longer. 2003 is the last vintage for this wine as Merli has decided to make an entry-level wine which is fresher and more accessible as opposed to the Macchiole bottling, which was essentially a second selection of the estate's less important barrels.
