Tasting notes
The 2012 Viognier comes from granite soils just 3km from False Bay so it is exposed to a marine microclimate. It was raised for 6 months in used barrels. It has an elegant bouquet that is not too phenolic or smudged: lemon curd, orange zest and just a hint of marmalade. The palate is well-balanced with a crisp line of acidity, and plenty of spicy citrus fruit with that leitmotif of marmalade reappearing on the vibrant, citrus fresh finish with Nashi pear and a saline note (possibly from the sea air?) on the aftertaste. Excellent. Drink now-2017. The Foundry is Meerlust winemaker Chris Willliams’s personal project and is often a source for top grade Stellenbosch wines. In 2012, I would be focusing upon a couple of excellent white wines that offer outstanding value. Importer: Cape Classics, New York, NY; tel.(212) 686-1300 and ABS Agencies (UK)
