Good deep red. Inviting perfume of red cherry, orange zest and dried rose, plus a sexy nutty nuance. Then much more backward in the mouth than the Cerretta, with candied red fruit flavors accented by a peppery note. Finishes with substantial tannins and a distinct youthful austerity. This will require patience but will it ever provide as much pleasure as the Cerretta?

The dark, brooding side of Serralunga comes through in spades in the 2009 Barolo Prapò. A hulking, intense wine, the 2009 hits the palate with smoke, tar, licorice, black fruit, leather and a host of other aromas and flavors. The Prapò is a rare 2009 that is going to require cellaring for at least a few years, as the tannins are imposing, to say the least.

Commune of Serralunga. Beautiful mid ruby with the beginning of orange. Balsamic and complex spice nose with oak notes and the merest hint of leather. Concentrated palate with ripe, bold fruit pulled into shape by a good dollop of gravelly tannins. Complex. (WS)

The 2009 Barolo Prapo perhaps takes that ripeness to the extreme limit. In addition to black fruit and plum, this wine lavishes over a thick layer of oak-inspired spice, tobacco and cinnamon. The style will appeal to those who enjoy full-bodied Barolo with more density and heft. It definitely needs more time in the bottle. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2028.
