The 2017 Barolo Prapò is powerful and quite dense, yet also retains a sense of transparency that is admirable. Sage, dried herbs, menthol licorice and earthy accents give the Prapò an element of wildness that is beguiling. The tannins are firm, and yet there is more than enough fruit to provide balance. The 2017 is very nicely done.

A 9,000-bottle release, the 2017 Barolo Prapò is chiseled and whetted with a fine and carefully measured combination of fruit weight, structural power and mineral freshness. The bouquet offers cassis, wild plum, baked clay brick and camphor ash. The wine settles smoothly onto the palate and shows impressive integration with no rough edges to be found.

The 2017 Barolo Prapo spent 24 months aging in large French and Slavonian oak. Expressive of dried apricot, forest floor, anise, and dried rose, it is fresh and structured, with notes of pure cherry fruit, blood orange, and dusty earth. This is another energetic example from 2017 highlighting the potential freshness within the vintage. Drink 2023-2042. Founded in 1856, Ettore Germano is a fourth-generation winery currently under the oversight of Sergio Germano. They have 10 hectares of holdings in Serralunga d’Alba and nine hectares in Ciglie in Alta Langa.

Serralunga d'Alba. 40 days on the skins and aged in two different large casks of 25 hl: Slavonian and French oak. Just mid ruby and youthful-looking. Brooding, deep nose of ripe red fruit with a suggestion of dark tobacco. Minerally and a little peppery. Succulent sour cherry that is mouth-filling and at the same time contained. Gripping, chewy tannins to match the generous fruit. Quite compact on the finish. Looks deceptively ready, but in actual fact isn't. (WS)
