Tasting notes
Dark red. Reticent but pure aromas of dark berries, mocha, licorice and menthol. At once suave and penetrating, showing a cooling herbal element to the intense flavors of cassis, boysenberry, cedar, licorice and mint. Gained in richness as it opened in the glass, but this wine especially stands out for its energy. Finishes with ripe, firm tannins and excellent length.

The 2005 Estate Cuvee State Lane Vineyard, which is a blend of 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, spent 20 months in 100% new oak. There are 800 cases. The wine comes across as very Pauillac-like, with notes of cedar wood, crème de cassis, licorice and graphite. It is still opaque purple, full-bodied, pure, richly textured and impressive. It’s accessible and drinking well already, but promises to evolve for at least another 15 or more years.
