The Rall 2022 Swartland Red is Syrah (from the same vineyard in the Swartland used in the mono-varietal expression) with Grenache, Carignan and Cinsault. This wine delivers more texture and intensity, and it shows a big-boned personality that wraps thickly over the palate. It is fleshy and oozing with dark fruit, along with fragrant tones of heritage rose, wild herb and African brush. The fruit is very balanced and pretty.

78% Syrah, 12% Grenache, 7% Carignan and 3% Cinsault. Approximately 80% from schist vineyards. Aged in used French oak (an extra year in bottle compared with the rest of the range). Mid crimson. Interesting blend. Does it have a little Pinotage? It certainly tastes a little Cape-ish. But it's actually the Carignan I'm tasting that makes it a little bitter. Quite long. (JR)

Working with fruit from the Swartland, Piekenierskloof, Darling and Stellenbosch, Donovan Rall is one of South Africa’s top winemaking talents. He created his own label in 2008, while working alongside Eben Sadie, and now consults on various projects as well as making his exception Rall wines.
