The 2012 Château Soutard is beautiful, and is yet another 2012 that’s showing brilliantly today. A deep purple color is followed by classic Saint-Emilion earthy minerality as well as notes of cassis, white flowers, graphite, lead pencil shavings, and hints of spice. Medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated, and beautifully balanced, it still has plenty of tannins, yet the purity of fruit is first rate, it has a great mid-palate, and loads of class. It’s going to continue drinking brilliantly for another 15 years or more.

Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux tasting. The 2012 Soutard has more vigor on the nose compared to 2012 Fonplégade and 2012 Larmande, black cherries and raspberry preserve, nicely integrated oak here. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, well-judged acidity, oaky in style at the moment, but there is sufficient fruit to support that—meaning that the finish has commendable harmony and sustain in the mouth. I agree with Robert Parker—this is a fine Saint Emilion from Soutard. Tasted January 2016.

Tasted blind. Real interest on the nose. Lots of undergrowth but no obvious green on the nose. Still a bit edgy on the palate but it should all settle down to a pretty harmonious drink. Vigorous. Relatively light-bodied. (JR)

Oaky dark fruit. Toast and char winning at the moment. More juicy on the palate, fluid and fresh and juicy, but overall a bit hard on the finish. (JH)
