Tasting notes
100% Tempranillo. Vineyards of bush vines in Anguix, Roa, Quintamanvirgo and La Horra. Limestone soils on slopes at about 800 m elevation. Hand-harvested, then refrigerated. Use of sorting table then alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel with selected yeast. Malolactic conversion in new French oak barrels. Aged for 16 months in French oak barrels (new and once used), followed by a further 12 months in the bottle. 350,000 bottles. Tasted blind. This is a dark wine with almost no rim. Ripe blue and dark cherries and berries. Very intense. The great fruit concentration masks the oak sensation, although it shows in hints of creaminess and soft toast. Massive, muscular and concentrated. Liquorice across the palate. Big and bold. Impressive impact and multi-layered palate. Protos shows in this great wine its most modern and powerful version. (FC)

The 2021 Protos 27, featuring the company's inaugural label, is made with Tempranillo grapes sourced from Anguix, Roa, Quintamanvirgo and La Horra and spent 16 months aging in French oak barrels. Garnet-red in the glass. The aromatic profile features dried flowers, wild herbs and notes of strawberry yogurt supported by prominent woody undertones. The palate is dry and creamy with a taut, flowing profile due to the young tannins (I sampled it three months after bottling). This wine's velvety texture leaves a lasting impression.
