Monforte d’Alba. Calcareous soils and hence the roots need to go deep. Palish ruby. Lifted, concentrated cherry and raspberry nose with stunning minerality. Almost a little mouth-watering and then closes up. Layered, finely ground tannins. Long and with real depth and at the same time elegant. A strikingly different tannic structure from Colonnello. But they both need much more time. (WS)

The 2020 Barolo Cicala is packed with black fruit, espresso, licorice, vanillin, new leather, cloves and tobacco. A huge, dense Barolo, the 2020 possesses notable textural intensity and volume. At the same time, sweet new oak signatures are overpowering, while Cicala character is overwhelmed by the wood. Even so, this is a very good wine, just not one that is true to site.
