Score 89/100 · Drink 2019-2028, Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate, Oct 2019

Comprised of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon is richer and fuller than the cooler Cabernet bottling from Franschhoek. The wine has a blackberry nose with complex nuances of black tea, worn leather and dark chocolate. The wine is full-bodied on the palate, with integrated oak expressions and rocky minerality, ending with a long finish. The warmth of Stellenbosch is clear and evident on the palate. 40,000 bottles produced.

The 2016 Boekenhoutskloof Stellenbosch Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the Helderberg region and was matured in 60% new oak, the rest second-fill, for 18 months. It has a smoky, quite meaty bouquet, and the Cabernet Franc (8% of the blend) imparts a light bell pepper aroma. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin and a little chewy in the mouth, offering blackberry and cedar, then midway more red fruit than I anticipated, and a smooth finish. Drink over the next four to six years.
