Massolino's 2005 Barolo has aged gracefully. Just at the early part of its plateau of maturity. Sweet dark cherry, wild flowers, mint and new leather are all nicely delineated in the glass. Lithe and gracious on the palate, the 2005 retains striking freshness and nuance. This is a terrific wine at its level, not to mention that it is incredibly delicious.

Palish garnet. Lifted, vanilla-dusted cherries. So tangy there's almost a citrus element in the aroma mix. Dry and tight and less filled out on the palate than the 2004s. But a fine sweetness of fruit on the long finish. I wonder if it will flesh out more in the middle? (JH)

The 2005 Barolo is a very pretty wine made in an ethereal, soft style. Pretty notes of dark cherries, leather, licorice and sweet spices come together in a wine of unusual grace at this level. The wine shows no hard edges and a pure, fresh finish. This is an excellent choice for near-term drinking.

The wine shows no hard edges and a pure, fresh finish. This is an excellent choice for near-term drinking. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2015. This is a beautiful set of wines from brothers Franco and Roberto Massolino. These Barolos offer gorgeous balance in the mid-weight style of the vintage. There will also be a 2005 Barolo Riserva Vigna Rionda, but that wine won’t be ready for several years. Importer: Domaine Select, New York, NY; tel. (212) 279-0799
