Tasting notes
The 2020 Vinha da Francisca (Quinta Vale D. Maria) is a field blend of Sousão, Touriga Nacional and others, heavy on Sousão, all aged for 18 months in 50% new French oak. It comes in at 14.6% alcohol. Showing fine depth, beautiful precision and a gripping finish, this is another beautiful Vinha da Francisca. They aren't here side-by-side, but it seems to be a fine follow-up to the wonderful 2019. I'd give a slight edge to that, but that is ultimately a question we will only answer some years from now. For the moment, this gorgeous red shows off structure, concentration, flavor and craftsmanship. It is perhaps a touch disjointed in its youth, so have some patience. It is a big wine that needs a couple of years in the cellar, at least, to pull in some wood and become more harmonious. It should have no trouble rounding into form, especially if you come back closer to the end of this decade. It should hold well, so there is no rush.
