Score 91-93/100 · William Kelley, Wine Advocate, Jan 2021

Aromas of sweet berries, spices and raw cocoa, framed by a deft touch of oak, introduce the 2019 Volnay 1er Cru Les Fremiets, a medium to full-bodied, deep and succulent wine with fine mid-palate volume, lively acids and an attractively saline finish. This cuvée derives from old vines, some dating back to 1932.

The 2019 Volnay Les Fremiets 1er Cru sees 20% new oak. It has a very harmonious bouquet with pure cranberry and raspberry fruit, though maybe not the most complex example that I encountered from this vineyard. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip, quite structured, a hint of spice and balsamic behind the raspberry and cranberry fruit with a light cola note on the finish. I am fascinated to see how this Fremiets will develop.
