Tasting notes
The Castello della Paneretta 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva sees Sangiovese blended with a tiny part Canaiolo. This expression is a little flat with air dried aromas of wild fruit, plum, green olive, earth and a touch of cypress tree or rosemary essence. The wine retreats to a formal, classic personality that reminds of some of the Chianti Classicos made 10 or 20 years ago. It also feels a bit more aged than expected. Pair it with a beef bourguignon.

The 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva is a striking wine from Castello della Paneretta. Pine, menthol, licorice, tobacco, cedar and cinnamon give the 2016 a savory, balsamic-infused profile that plays off a core of dark cherry fruit. Layered and deep, with terrific vibrancy and mid-weight structure, the 2016 captures the tension and saline-driven energy that are such signatures of the Paneretta wines.
Barberino Tavarnelle. 85% Sangiovese, 10% Canaiolo, 5% Colorino. Lustrous mid ruby. Huge, lifted cassis fruit nose, which could herald premox , and notes of oatmeal. Second sample is less exuberant, but still quite unusual. Elegant, almost racy palate with a similar big aromatic build-up on the finish and with slightly drying tannins. (WS)
