Tasting notes
Full bottle 1,200 g. Alcohol: 13.5%. Late, cool, relatively wet growing season though October was unusually fine. Harvest: hand-picked starting from 10 September (Merlot), from 20 September (Sangiovese). Fermentation temperature: 28–30 °C. Period of maceration: 15 days (Merlot), 16 days (Sangiovese). Ageing: 15–16 months in small (225-litre) French oak barrels. Bottling: June 1997. Production: 27,000 bottles. Glowing, quite dark ruby with a pale rim. Sweet, ripe nose without quite the freshness of Sangiovese to the fore. Seems more dominated by the sweetness of Merlot. Flattering but less typically Tuscan than the two earlier vintages. Velvety/furry – a rather typical wine of the 1990s. But there is no decay. It's just a little simpler than some other vintages. (JR)

50% Merlot, 50% Sangiovese. Very deep glowing ruby. Heady, powerful prune essence on the nose. A fine, dry finish. Absolutely not sweet and accommodating Napa style. Bite. Substance and persistence. Hint of coffee grounds. Very, very long. (JR)
Dark ruby-red. High-pitched cassis, black raspberry and smoky oak aromas. Concentrated dark berry, floral and mineral flavors are given definition and freshness by sound acidity. Strong backbone for aging. Finishes with firm tannins and sneaky length.
