Tasting notes
The 2011 Chianti Classico Riserva is 90% Sangiovese and 10% Canaiolo from the largely unexplored Barberino Val d'Elsa corner of the appellation. This is a totally offbeat and unique wine that marches to the beat of its own drum. The bouquet is savory and masculine with heavy tones of teak wood, Indian spice, mahagony, barbecue smoke and balsam herb. All said and done, there is very little fruit on hand to give the wine depth or staying power. Again, you get that trademark sweetness on the close that appears in all the wines I tasted from Castello della Paneretta this year.

The 2011 Chianti Classico Riserva presents the expressive aromatics that are typical of the estate's wines, wedded to an ample, richly textured fruit that is the signature of the year. Succulent, sweet black cherries, tobacco, incense, leather and cedar flesh out in a generous, inviting Riserva that should offer another decade plus of fine drinking.
