The 2011 Montevetrano lifts from the glass with a mature blend of fall leaves, damp earth, plum sauce and clove. This is rich, nearly fleshy in feel, with cooling acidity to balance. Tart wild berry fruits find a lovely contrast through a tinge of blood orange. It finishes long and staining with a licorice twang, leaving edgy tannins to linger. The 2011 is beautifully balanced, and, while the nose shows more advanced aromas, it remains remarkably fresh on the palate.

The 2011 Montevetrano is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Aglianico and 20% Merlot. This has been the blending configuration since 2010. Back when the wine was first made in 1991, Cabernet Sauvignon was by far the greatest part of the blend (at 90%), but the native Aglianico grape has slowly grown in prominence over the years. This great Campania-blended red shows very nicely in the warm vintages such as 2011. It reveals dark and succulent fruit flavors with bold cherry, blackberry, mild spice and leather.
