The 1954 Beychevelle punches above my expectations and, indeed, those of Philippe Blanc. The nose offers meaty red fruit, a touch of wild mint, singed leather and mahogany bureau. The palate is medium-bodied with impressive balance, carrying more weight than the 1954 Pichon Comtesse tasted the previous evening. Gentle and somehow "soothing" with a dash of white pepper on the finish, this delightful Beychevelle is one of the vintage's surprises. Tasted at the château.

About the producer

Beychevelle
With greater care in the vineyard and more precision in the winery, Ch. Beychevelle's star is rising. That's in large part due to the leadership of Philippe Blanc and investment by current owners, Japanese brewers Suntory and French wine group Castel.
