Score 87/100 · Drink 2021-2028, Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous, Apr 2021

Nineteen seventy-six was a taste of what was to come in 2003 - it was a drought year with high temperatures that were not particularly conducive to botrytis. The result is a rather quiet sweet 1976 Moulin Touchais Coteaux du Layon - not showy in aromas nor opulent in sweetness. It displays a deep golden color, reflecting its 40-plus years in bottle. The nose is understated albeit slightly high toned, reminiscent of burnt orange, toffee apple and ground almonds. It's a sweet style but it retains a focused core and despite its sweetness, it shows a lightness of touch. Considering the heat and the dry of the season, the acidity provides enough refreshment on the finish.
