Dark brownish amber. A little decay on the nose. 'Good breakfast Sauternes', according to Nicholas Payne. Crème brûlée with masses of evolution. Much better than any 1968 red I can think of. Very sweet on the mid palate with a not-unpleasant bitter Oxford marmalade-like finish. Really very substantial. Not for a long future but a real surprise for current drinking! (JR)

The 1968 Yquem was picked during bouts of heavy rain over 41 days of harvest when half the crop was disposed. It has a deep amber hue. The nose is quite intense: marmalade, toffee apple and ripe Clementines all delivered with commendable definition. The palate is not as fine as the nose with a Aszú-like character, tinned apricots mixed with toffee apple and nougat. Just a touch of VA mars the finish. Not undrinkable, but this is for Yquem die-hards only.

Deep tawny marmelade colour. Very slightly mousey to begin with on the nose. Palate very rich and extremely long, but a bit of dryness at the end. Not complete; a bit jagged. 16 and probably near its peak. (JR)
