The 2012 L’Extravagant de Doisy-Daëne is missing some presence on the nose, straightforward for this cuvée, honey and orange blossom, a touch of petrol. The palate is well balanced with fine definition, very pure with orange rind, mandarin and peach, hints of crème caramel towards the finish. Drinking now.

Pale and still a touch cloudy. Complex and intense aromas of quince and citrus. Intense, rich, and is more zesty than most with a lively sour lemon finish. Very sweet aftertaste. (JH)
It is quite remarkable that Denis Dubourdieu managed to eke out his “L’Extravagant” in a growing season that was anything but! One bottle was “out of sorts,” but the second offered perfumed scents of honey, dandelion and Gewurztraminer-like peach that is light compared to previous vintages, but still attractive. The palate is viscous on the entry with plenty of ripe botrytized honeyed fruit, although, to be honest, it does cut away quickly on the finish. I actually found more potential within Denis Dubourdieu’s regular Doisy-Daene.

About the producer
This Second Growth estate has origins dating back to the late 1800s. It is, however, under the ownership of the Dubourdieu family – who took over the Barsac property in 1924 – that Ch. Doisy-Daëne truly flourished.
