Full bottle 1,243 g. Sangiovese di Lamole from hilly terraced vineyards on sandy, silty soil at 450 m, south-west and west facing. Fermented for 12 days in stainless-steel tanks, and then aged for 14 months in 350-litre tonneaux. Six months in bottle before release. Sometimes I just want to write, ‘I like this wine’. Like this wine. It’s quite oaky, but it’s somehow getting away with it because the fruit (which tastes one minute like black cherries and the next like blackberries) is so plump and juicy. It’s oozing exuberance. Ripe fruit smudged with chocolate and a dusting of cocoa. And then the tannins sweep in like autumn, bringing a smoky soft crackle of leafiness. (TC)

From a classic vintage, the Poggio Scalette 2021 Il Carbonaione is a rich and darkly colored expression of Sangiovese with black ruby hues. There is more color saturation here than you would find in most Sangiovese-based wines, and this bottle could be matched to heftier foods featuring red or game meats. The wine holds to the palate with intensity and imparts solid and lasting fruit weight. The Fiore family has crafted a pretty IGT wine, with a production of 25,000 bottles.

The 2021 Il Carbonaione is a regal, elegant wine. Silky, beautifully perfumed and persistent, the 2021 is everything I want from Il Carbonaione. All the purity of Sangiovese caresses the senses in a wine that is both textually intense and also light on its feet. Dark red-toned fruit, rose petals, cinnamon, new leather and cedar are some of the many nuances that open in the glass. Silky, polished tannins wrap it all together in style. I would give this a few years in bottle, or a healthy decant if that is not possible.
