Another special site within a site, like Supercal, the 2020 Malbec Finca Piedra Infinita Gravascal is highly aromatic in the native vegetation of jumilla, wild cinnamon, and herb. With more richness and oomph on the palate than the Supercal, it has a depth of blue fruit that contrasts against sanguine, feral notions of iron and wild game. Still, it's ultimately a savory wine, spiced in white pepper and garrigue, with length, breadth, and composure for days, or years in this case. It should age beautifully 20-25 years. A multi-generational winery and restaurant in the Valle de Uco under the guidance of winemaker Sebastian Zuccardi, these are mountain wines with a sense of place, expressive of the terroir of specific vineyards, parcels, soils, and altitude. In 2016, the winery was built after dividing vineyards by soil type, and it’s made entirely of concrete inside and out, with concrete vessels also used for fermentation and aging. Its highest-level wines are the Parcel Wines, made to show the uniqueness of a particular parcel of land within an estate vineyard.

The 2020 Malbec Finca Piedra Infinita Gravascal hails from a tiny plot in the eponymous vineyard in Paraje Altamira, where the soils are rich in gravel and chalk. Purple in the glass. The sharply defined nose delivers rose, mint, plum, raspberry and violet notes. Dry and restrained in the mouth, the lean, taut palate resonates with a rich, chalky texture and juicy mouthfeel. The complex, extremely nuanced red asks intriguing questions of the drinker. The precision is all the more admirable, given the warm year.

Just short of perfection in 2020, but this is still a world class wine from the brilliant Sebastián Zuccardi, sourced from a 0.74-hectare parcel on gravel and limestone soils within the Piedra Infinita estate. Scented, ethereal and energetic, this is a detailed, complex, unwooded Malbec with blood orange and blackberry flavours and some underlying grip and backbone. The essence of the new Argentina, it’s a wine that inspires and delights.

Superb depth here. Oyster shells, thyme, wild herbs, ink, graphite and lots of black cherries. A powerhouse of tannins on the full-bodied palate; vertical, colossal. Austere and puristic but super confident and chalky. Polished, too. Drink or hold.
