Better, with additional ripeness and texture, the 2011 Saint Joseph offers up classic northern Rhone meatiness, with plenty of saddle leather, wild herbs, rendered bacon fat and sweet red and blackberry fruit. Medium-bodied, supple and nicely textured, it’s a delicious, elegant Syrah to drink over the coming 5-6 years. These solid, yet at times slightly wild, efforts are made by Natacha Chave. They have loads of character and are worth seeking out. Importer: Grape Expectations, Inc. Richmond, CA; tel. (510) 412-5969

Darker and more savoury on the nose than the Crozes-Hermitage. Some savoury oak adds spice to the pure fruit. A little richer than the Crozes-Hermitage but still has such very fine tannins. Long too. (JH)
