Tasting notes
The 2022 Quinta Senhora da Ribeira Vintage Port is their single quinta from 2022. Even though Dow's is associated with a drier style of Port, this Dow's has 105 grams of sugar. It's quite approachable, clean and fruit-driven, which seems to be the character of the year. It has classical aromas of ripe berry fruit, dried herbs, spices, licorice and cocoa with elegance, bright flavors and fine tannins and lifted by very good freshness. It was produced with a blend of 55% Touriga Nacional (is that the unusual floral note?), 26% Touriga Franca and 19% Sousão in automated lagar and matured in large oak vessels for 18 months. 12,360 bottles produced. It was bottled in 2024.

A Symington estate in the Douro Superior. Touriga Franca on south-facing slopes and Touriga Nacional vineyard rising to 400 m and cooler, east-facing. One of the two properties that Andrew James Symington started farming in 2012. In 2022 there was two-thirds less rainfall than the 30-year average. Picking started 22 August. Touriga Nacional picked during cooler temperatures and Touriga Franca after the rain. Automated punching down. Black core with no rim, ie black to the edge. Highly aromatic with violets, elderberry and blueberry. Terrific freshness in the mouth. But even with the floral and deep black fruit, there is a dark, rocky note, really savoury, thickly dry. Grainy, firm tannins with a citrus-like freshness at the core. Dry texture but sweet flavour. Chewy-chalky finish in youth. (JH)
